This website is intended to answer questions you may have about the new human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine that can help protect against cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer can be very serious and around 1,000 women die from it in the UK each year, but having the vaccine reduces the risk of getting cervical cancer by over 70%.

Smear tests
Smear tests (cervical screening) will continue to be essential to detect changes in the cervix caused by the types of HPV that this vaccine does not protect against. From the age of 20 women will be invited for screening as normal.
